Richard Thompson på Commons

Richard Thompson (født 3. april 1949) er en britisk gitarist og låtskriver. Thompson var med å danne den britiske folkrock-gruppa Fairport Convention, og har siden den gang gitt ut en rekke soloalbum. Fra 1970-tallet, og til begynnelsen av 1980-tallet, ga han ut en rekke plater sammen med sin daværende kone, Linda Thompson, med I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight (1974) og skilsmisseplata Shoot Out the Lights (1982) som noen av høydepunktene.

Richard Thompsons musikk er ofte preget av innslag fra britisk og amerikansk folkemusikk iblandet moderne rock og pop.

Thompson ble i dronningens nyttårsliste for 2011 utnevnt til offiser av Den britiske imperieordenen for fortjenester av musikken.[6]

Millenniumskonsert

I 1999 ble Richard Thompson oppringt av Playboy Magazine som ba ham liste opp millenniets 10 beste sanger. De mente nok trolig decenniet, men Thompson tok dem på ordet og ga redaksjonen en ti på topp liste som startet med år 1068. Da listen ikke ble publisert fikk han den idé at han selv ville gjøre en konsert hvor han presenterte sitt eget bidrag til 1000 Years of Popular Music. Konserten førte til utgivelsen av en DVD og 2 CD-er, hvor han starter med Sumer Is Icumen In (fra ca. 1260) og ender opp med Oops!… I Did It Again (2000) og 1985 (2004). På konserten ble han akkompagnert av Judith Owen (sang, keyboards) og Debra Dobkin (perkusjon, sang).
