Rodzaj obejmuje gatunki występujące w Ameryce (Meksyk, Belize, Gwatemala, Salwador, Honduras, Nikaragua, Kostaryka, Panama, Kuba, Bahamy, Kajmany, Jamajka, Turks i Caicos, Navassa, Haiti, Dominikana, Portoryko, Brytyjskie Wyspy Dziewicze, Wyspy Dziewicze Stanów Zjednoczonych, Anguilla, Sint Maarten, Saba, Saint-Barthélemy, Sint Eustatius, Saint Kitts i Nevis, Antigua i Barbuda, Montserrat, Gwadelupa, Dominika, Martynika, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent i Grenadyny, Grenada, Kolumbia, Trynidad i Tobago, Wenezuela, Gujana i Ekwador)^[2]^[3].

Jaszczurki z tego rodzaju prowadzącą głównie naziemny i nocny tryb życia. Żywią się owadami.

Systematyka

Rodzaj zdefiniował w 1830 roku niemiecki przyrodnik Johann Georg Wagler w publikacji własnego autorstwa dotyczącej systematyki płazów i gadów z wstępem dotyczącym systematyki ptaków i ssaków^[1]. Wagler wymienił trzy gatunki – Gecko porphyreus Daudin, 1802, Lacerta sputator Sparrman, 1784 i Sphaerodactylus cinereus wagler, 1830 – z których gatunkiem typowym jest Lacerta sputator Sparrman, 1784.

Etymologia

Sphaerodactylus: gr. σφαιρος sphairos ‘kula, piłka’, od σφαιροω sphairoō ‘zaokrąglony’^[4]; δακτυλος daktulos ‘palec’^[5].
