Radnja
Film prikazuje pedesetogodišnji raspon velške obitelji Morgan, koja se bavi rudarenjem ugljena. Upravo to u filmu mi vidimo kroz oči najmlađeg Morgana po imenu Huw (Roddy McDowall), odnosno radnju koju vidimo u filmu zapravo on pripovijeda.
Tijekom brojnih godina, Morganovi se s mnogim stvarima hvataju u koštac ne bi li preživjeli: unionizacija, štrajkovi i zlostavljanje djece.
Prolaskom vremena, njihov rodni grad kao i njegova kultura počinju propadati.

Režiser John Ford je želio snimati film u svom prirodnom okruženju, Walesu, no događaji u Europi, odnosno Drugi Svjetski rat je učinio njegovu želju neostvarivom.
